Shop 'til You Drop

Virtually everyone who, for professional reasons, spends his or her days staring forlornly into an illuminated screen fosters dreams breaking down the cubicle walls, learning to do something really authentic, really physical, really real. Ask This Old House, Frontier House, and even Holmes on Homes pile on the seduction without ever delivering the satisfaction.

At the same time, Michael and I have bought our first house, or more accurately "project box," and I have been literally unable to sleep many nights while visions of built-in book cases dance in my head.

So I have taken the plunge, and I am indulging my own fantasy of retro-butchism. I am a community college student in the Light Building Trades program, starting with woodworking and carpentry. I am a complete novice with nothing to lose but $200.35 tuition!
